Design a small aquaponics system

NameDate

Back to the lesson

You are the designer now. Draw a small system where fish and plants share one loop of water.

My system

Draw your tank, grow bed, pump, and pipes. Add arrows to show where the water flows.

Parts checklist

Tick each part once it is in your drawing.

  • A fish tank (where the fish live)
  • A pump (lifts the water up)
  • A pipe up to the grow bed
  • A grow bed full of gravel (where the plants grow)
  • A way for water to flow back to the tank
  • A waterline in the tank and in the bed
A cutaway of an aquaponics system. A fish tank sits low on the left. 3 fish swim in the tank. A pump in the tank lifts water up a pipe to a grow bed filled with gravel, higher up on the right, where plants grow. The water soaks through the gravel and drains back down to the tank. Dashed lines mark the top of the water in the tank and in the bed.
  • A · fish tank
  • B · pump
  • C · pipe
  • D · grow bed
  • E · water back to the tank

One way to build it. Yours can look different.

My fish

Some fish like warm water. Some like cool water. Tick one, then name a fish that likes it.

  • Warm water
  • Cool water

My fish

My plants

Pick plants that like the same water as your fish. Leafy greens and herbs suit a small, new system.

Where my crew lives

The crew lives on wet surfaces, like gravel and roots. Circle that spot in your drawing. Then write where it is.

My crew lives

My waiting plan

The crew needs a few weeks to grow before fish come. Write what you would check each week.

  3. Week 3
  4. Week 4
  5. Week 5
  6. Week 6

Care: A paper design needs no fish. If you build one with fish, an adult is in charge of their care.
